Launch was very appealing
St. Paul's Cathedral in London was the venue for the launch of an appeal to rebuild the Anglican Space, our former school which now provides a home to five social projects.
But we weren't the only ones making an appeal on a bitterly cold December day. The Occupy St. Paul's protest, which has been campaigning against economic inequality, social injustice and corporate greed since early October, was still going at full strength with an encampment of 150 tents and tarpaulin shelters clustered around the cathedral entrance.
In spite of all the criticism and challenges they were facing, the Dean and Chapter generously made the Crypt available for the event hosted by our Appeal Patrons, The Rt. Revd. David Hamid, Assistant Bishop in Europe, and Lady Marina Hobson.
The appeal aims to raise £120,000 in order that we can create beter quality space for community organizations, including eight meeting rooms, a hall, kitchen and two small apartments that can be used by ordinands on placement.
As no special occasion in Brazil goes without a cake, tea was served at the end of the afternoon with slices of very delicious chocolate cake.
Ironically, when the time came to go home it was one of several Brazilian vergers on the staff of the cathedral who came to lead us out of the building, bemused on arrival to hear the sounds and rhythms of his homeland reverberating around Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece.
